Our history
Since it's founding in Hong Kong by long time American expat Joel Laykin in 2001 The International Power Professionals Forum, formerly known as the Independent Power Producers Forum (IPPF), has worked toward a level playing field, transparency, Rule of Law and a better overall investment environment in all facets of the power and energy industry.
The IPPF is an organization made up of senior executives and decision-makers in the energy and power generation sector and related firms with active business commitments in throughout the world.
We interact in a positive manner with like-minded international bodies and institutions, support and work with appropriate educational institutions and leading academics. The IPPF supports the development of industry guidelines, white papers, position statements and appropriate policy research.
Our resources and support draws from key elements in the industry and is executed through NGOs, chambers, selected organizations, seminars, workshops, symposiums, panels and speakers. Most importantly, we are pro-active advocates for fair play in our industry, putting our positions forward through effective public affairs and appropriate government channels.
We provide opportunities for members to develop deal-flow and respond to each other’s concerns on best practices for the enhancement of the industry and in the countries in which we operate.

Building on the legacy of the Independent Power Producers Forum, IPPF serves as a dynamic platform where professionals from across the energy landscape—utilities, private developers, regulators, financiers, and technical experts—connect to exchange knowledge, form strategic relationships, and drive progress in an increasingly complex and interconnected energy world.
While originally rooted in Asia, the IPPF has expanded globally. The Forum champions critical energy issues such as the rule of law, regulatory transparency, and market liberalization while promoting sustainable development and equitable energy access. Through high-level networking events, working groups, and advocacy initiatives, the Forum empowers its members to share insights, shape policy, and pursue transformative energy deals.
